The elder Milton, disinherited by his father for transferring his allegiance from the Catholic to the Protestant Church, had been an uncommonly successful lawyer and had made something of a fortune. He was a man of considerable culture, particularly in music, and the poet owed to him his early enthusiasm for art and learning. The mother is spoken of as noted in the neighborhood for piety and good works. There were two other children in the family, an elder sister, Anne, and a brother, Christopher. There is some evidence that the poet was more warmly attached to the former than to the latter. In general the atmosphere of the Milton household must have been a favorable one for the formation and development of genius. Milton found with his parents security and peace, and he preferred his father’s house to all other places, even after he had reached maturity. Milton’s intellectual precocity was early recognized and carefully cherished. Educational opportunity was provided for him, first by private tutors at home, then at St. Paul’s School, which he entered in 1620. He was, according to Aubrey, ‘a poet at the age of 10,’ and Milton himself refers to the notice which his early writings attracted from his elders: ‘After I had for my first years, by the ceaseless diligence and care of my father (whom God recompense!), been exercised to the tongues and some sciences, as my age would suffer, by sundry masters and teachers, both at home and at the school, it was found that whether aught was imposed me by those that had the overlooking, or betaken to of my own choice in English, or other tongue, prosing or versing, but chiefly this latter, the style, by certain vital signs it had, was likely to life.'” (from the Introduction) The book has a blue cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine.
