This vintage vacuum tube, model JTL 1U4 is a collectible tube made in the United States. It is packaged in its original box and is a must-have for vintage electronics enthusiasts. Coated filament, filament voltage DC 1.4 volts, filament current .05 ampere (50 milliamps). At just 50 milliamps of current to operate the filament, this tube could run a very long time off of a single D cell alkaline battery. it would lend itself very well to portable battery powered radio circuits that employ low level audio into headphones or earphones, or to drive a separate audio amplifier circuit connected to a small speaker. Many DIY’ers and radio enthusiasts have searched for years in the spec sheets for tubes that can successfully be used for just such applications. Many have used what are known as Space Charge tubes, originally designed to work in automobile applications for onboard radios in the mid to late 50’s, just before the invention of the first transistors. Thanks to early, unreliable Germanium transistors, the Space Charge tube was used for a long time until transistors were improved and ubiquitous enough to be employed in new all solid state car radios. Those tubes are wonderful, except they take 3 times as much energy to fire and that is fine if you have a 12 volt vehicle battery handy. These one volt tubes have been in portable radios since someone first came up with the idea to have a radio small enough to carry around to ball games, horse races and to a local gathering spot to listen to election results. Back then, radio WAS the internet,…and MP3 player combined! And back then the A battery used in portables made D cells look puny. Some of the B batteries for the plate voltages were the size of bricks and weighed almost as much. This particular line of tubes was built under a Federal contract by TUNG-SOL Electric Co. (SC-18285)and packaged in Oct 1951, the Post WWII era. The box has been through a bit of dampness, but has survived to this day in reasonable shape. The JTL designation was a special MIL-SPEC classification and usually involved extra rigorous testing for thermal and inertial survivability to ensure the designs would hold up under the most demanding and harshest of environments.
