eBay Jon Price Pottery Handcrafted Ceramic Wheel Thrown Cylinder Ikebana Vase Product Description: This attractive cylinder vase is expertly wheel thrown and trimmed by master potter and author Jon Price. Jon is a 3rd generation potter, working out of Southern California since 1989. This piece is carefully fired in a high temperature kiln with crystal forming glazes. Crystalline glazes are specialty glazes that show visible and distinct crystal growth in the matrix of the fired glaze. Crystalline glazes require a high level of expertise and sophistication in formulation as well as firing. The process of creating a crystalline glaze is more involved than working with a regular glaze as it has a tendency to run off the pot and the firing cycle is very dependent on accurate temperature measurements. The vase combines traditional pottery techniques with modern aesthetics. The artist expertly marries Japanese traditions with American sensibilities in his work. Clearly marked with the artist’s name. From Jon Price: As a third-generation potter, ceramics has been very important to me all my life. I started throwing on the wheel and compounding my own glazes when I was ten years old. In 1989, after many years of making raku and stoneware, I decided to take up the challenge of creating the crystalline glazes that I had long admired. Properly compounding and firing these glazes are considered by most potters to be the most technically difficult of ceramic processes. Since then I have developed many unique crystalline glazes which I apply to only the finest porcelain clay. They are the only glazes I use. I am a full-time potter. All items are made by me alone in my own studio. I formulate and mix all of my own special porcelain clay and crystalline glazes. I fire all my items in the special kilns I made for firing these unusual glazes. I find working with these special glazes to be absolutely captivating. Rather little control can be overtly exercised over them, so mastering the scientific and technical skills required has been a central focus of my life. The biggest challenge is their fickleness: One firing will produce absolutely beautiful pots; the next (identical) firing, may be a big disappointment. Crystalline glazes are a good match for my personality: I have an immense amount of energy, technical curiosity, great patience, enjoy constantly pushing the limits of what one can do–and I don’t mind getting up in the middle of the night to tend the kiln! I find the spontaneously-formed crystal patterns in the glazes to be a never ending source of delight. No two are ever the same. I frequently see recognizable designs in them–faces, animals, flowers, etc.–as one often sees in the clouds. And with only small changes in the glaze ingredients or the firing schedule, I can produce crystals of a great variety of colors and shapes. I am well known for my classic shapes, my great variety of crystal shapes, and the extremely large range of colors I can create. And although I am very pleased with my accomplishments, much of my time is still devoted to experimenting to create ever newer effects. My intent is to create pots that fascinate and intrigue; pots that are both beautiful and interesting; pots that will bring joy into the lives of others as they bring into mine.
