10+ SUPER RARE Silver Deathlayer (or do you say Death Layer) chicken fertile hatching eggsTHE WORLD’S MOST STUNNING CHICKEN BREED You are bidding on 10+ rare Silver Deathlayer fertile hatching eggs.I have a small flock of Silver Deathlayer chickens.These rare birds are IMO truly the ultimate in chicken eye candy!!!!!These birds are originally from Germany, where they have been kept as an egg production breed for over 400 years! Deathlayers are prolific layers that produce a medium sized white egg. They were once kept commonly by the European small famers for their terrific utility egg production and hardy free range characteristics. In the early 1900s, modern commercial poultry breeds were introduced into Europe and gradually the farmers & homesteaders switched their loyalty over to the newer breeds. Over the last 100 years or so, the Deathlayer population in Europe experienced an immense decline. A recent survey in Germany found less than 2000 birds in existence!Several years ago, Paul Bradshaw of Greenfire Farms in Florida imported the original group of Silver Deathlayers into the United States. His intention was to protect this rare & valuable breed of chicken which is not only GORGEOUS in appearance, a consistent utility egg layer, but in addition is an excellent forager that lends well to a free range lifestyle (although my penned birds do excellently in that environment also). I gotta admit that when I laid eyes on my first picture of a pair of Silver Deathlayer chickens a couple of years ago, I was awestruck with their stunning appearance! It was love at first sight and I knew that I just had to acquire this breed for myself as an entry on my bucket list.Now since Deathlayers are so extremely rare….they are quite pricey also. Greenfire Farms offers day old UNSEXED chicks for around $100 each (before shipping costs are added in). Consequently, I knew that I was gonna have to establish my flock the working man’s way…..via fertile hatching eggs shipped through the United States Postal Service.Shipping eggs via USPS is a TOTAL CRAP SHOOT. If you don’t understand the HUGE RISKS of shipping fragile single celled embryos though the automated machines of the modern postal sorting system….then PLEASE do some research before buying eggs from me or any other egg seller on eBay!!!I bought a lot of eggs from a lot of sellers to establish my flock of Silver Deathlayers. I had hatch rates from zero to 80% in my GQF Sportsman 1502 incubator. If you think that you are gonna buy a few shipped eggs and reap a microwave flock of chickens, you are deluding yourself…..just sayin’…And you know what they say about the biggest fool on the block is the fool who fools himself…..so there’s that.But having said all of that….18 months latter….I have absolutely zero buyer’s remorse!!! These Silver Deathlayers are the ultimate in rarity….not to mention the epitome of chicken eye candy!!!! EVERYBODY who visits me, overlooks all of my other breeds to ask “What kind of chicken are those cool looking birds….never seen anything like them before?”Everyone also asks “Why do they call them Deathlayers?” Quite frankly….I am not quite sure. Oh yeah….I have heard the rumor in the chicken world that claims Deathlayer hens will lay an egg a day….once they get Rockin & Roiiin….every day…until they drop dead of old age.Is that true? Dunno….my oldest girl is basically still a Spring Chicken….I will have to get back to you on that. What I can tell you is that they do lay a crapper full of eggs on a consistent basis. And although those eggs are admittedly not as big as those that some of my other birds lay…..the fact that they are pure white sure makes it easier when candling eggs and making life and death decisions….especially during the hectic Spring incubating season. So there’s that too. So if you are desiring a steady stream of healthy eggs for your family….. a breed that you can allow to forage and free range (if need be in hard times….just sayin’)…. and your personality (like mine) is exited by the idea of owning the coolest head turning chicken in the county… (maybe the state due to their rarity)…. then I gotta tell ya…. you NEED some of these Silver Deathlayer Chickens!!!!I keep my birds in a tight ration of 1 rooster for every 3 hens, so as you can imagine, I get EXCELLENT fertility in eggs that I carefully carry in to my incubator from my backyard. Yeah….I know….I’m feeding way more roosters than I would need to… But that just means that my fertility is off the charts…. not to mention that the abundance of stunning boys strutting around adds a mess of Hillbilly Ambiance to my yard!Please realize that you can NOT compare my hand carried eggs to shipped eggs that have the added risk of “Shaken Zygote Syndrome”….but you get the idea.I have shipped eggs through the mail many times before. So I know how to pack them in order that they arrive in one piece. But as extra insurance for you, I will include an extra egg (or two if the girls cooperate) to cover the possibility of unforeseen damage in the mail. If the unthinkable does happen, contact me immediately. You will find me a very reasonable person to deal with and I will try hard to work things out for you.It is important that you pay for your eggs QUICKLY after the auction ends. It is in YOUR best interest that I get the eggs in the mail as soon as possible. Remember that you will need to let the eggs set pointy side down for 24 hours BEFORE placing them in your incubator.A NOTE ABOUT INCUBATORS: I have used various models over my four decades of hatching eggs on and off. Still air units to models with fans. Table top models to expensive cabinet ones. Waffers to electronic thermostats. Turned ‘em by hand myself, used automatic turners, even let broody hens do the hard labor. You name it. All of these methods have pros and cons, and EVERYBODY has an opinion about what works best. The one thing I do know is that I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER YOUR INCUBATOR OR YOUR HATCHING PRACTICES. So please leave feedback based on the condition of the eggs at arrival and my communications dealing with your order. I can not be held responsible for your hatch. A NOTE ABOUT SHIPPING EGGS IN THE MAIL: It is always better to buy your fertile hatching eggs locally and handle them yourself. However, this is not always possible. I have on occasion, had to turn to the internet to find the exact breed, color, or variety of bird that I am looking for. There are always added risks involved in this. The biggest obstacle is The United States Postal Service. It is not necessarily that the eggs arrive broken, but that they arrive SHAKEN. I will clearly mark your eggs as FRAGILE HANDLE WITH CARE. However much of today’s modern postal service is operated through the use of machines, conveyances, and automated conveyor belts. Those machines do not read the warning labels.The biggest risk to your eggs is the formation of “saddle air sacks” due to too much shaking going on. Research this on the internet and you will find that saddle sacks can allow the embryos to develop, but cause difficulty with hatching due to the transition between deriving oxygen from the yolk sack to breathing with their lungs at the time of the hatch.However, having said that, I personally have shipped many eggs through the mail system and had what I consider reasonable and expected hatch rates. As a matter of fact, I am happy to own some very rare chickens that I would have NEVER been able to obtain locally…..including my Silver Deathlayers. For this I owe my thanks to the USPS.I would encourage you to have your eggs held at the Post Office for Pick UP. This eliminates the final delivery leg in a hot/cold or over packed mail truck. If you would like, I can mark your eggs HOLD AT POST OFFICE FOR PICK UP. Just include your phone number and a note with these instructions with your PayPal payment. NOTE: it is important that during the Winter season, that you pay attention to the weather conditions in your area BEFORE bidding on my hatching eggs. Winter storms and predicted temperature forecasts must be taken into consideration BEFORE bidding. If conditions warrant on my end, I will include a professional heat pack (NOT a cheap little hand warmer like some sellers on eBay do) to protect these delicate live embryos. Beyond that I cannot be responsible Winter shipping variables. NOTE ABOUT WINTER/EARLY SPRING EGG AVAILABILITY: Although I sell and ship hatching eggs year-round (been doing it for years), there is always an increased interest in eggs when Spring truly kicks in and the weather turns nice again. Many folks look to set eggs during this season and postpone their egg purchases until the buds appear on the trees.
