Contemporary richly gilttooled treecalf, contrasting red and green morocco letteringpieces, marbled edges, 'Ex munificentia alumnorum oratorii' in gilt to upper boards. Some rubbing to spines, cracking to joints, a little chipping to head and feet of spines.. Marbled endpapers, internally clean and crisp. Prize plate to FEP of Vol. I, with inked inscription: 'George Pereira / Second Prize for English / John H. Card. Newman / July 1879'. A handsomely bound copy of the revised edition of British Army officer Sir William Francis Patrick Napier's (17851860) authoritative, and monumental, history of the Peninsular War, first published between 1828 and 1840, presented as a school prize and inscribed by Cardinal John Henry Newman.
